My Favourite Monsters A-Z – Xolotl/Xocoatl

October 28, 2012 at 11:16 pm (dark fantasy, writing) (, , , , , , , , )

Supposedly the twin of Quetzalcoatl, this monstrous serpent was darkness to his brethren’s light. Associated with death, the afterlife (he guided the dead there,) lightening, fire and bad luck, and often depicted as flaming, I would consider this the more frightening of the two.

His other forms include a skeletal being, a dog headed humanoid, and a monster-dog with reversed feet

There’s much less information out there about this more obscure and gloomier half of the pair (but then again, I count myself lucky to find any references to monsters starting with “x” at all.)

This is my sketch of the Xocoatl (which I completed at Hal-Con during a panel of the history of gothic themes in genre fiction – some fascinating stuff!)
