My Favourite Monsters A-Z – Undine

Undines, also referred to as ondines, are water nymphs of German-Swiss origin, named for the Latin for wave, unda. While in general they are not considered to be frightening monsters, they are associated with a curse that is actually quite scary. Required in legend to have to marry a human man and bear his child to obtain a soul, they would curse their spouse in a severe way if he proved to be unfaithful. Caught being untrue, the man would be doomed to die if he were ever to sleep again, thanks to an oath spoken by his vengeful wife. Obviously, one can only go so long without sleep, so this was a curse that end up a fatal one soon enough. According to myth, the reason for this particular curse began with one unfaithful spouse who had sworn to be true to his undine wife with every waking breath. She held him to that.

This is my sketch of an undine.
