My Favourite Monsters A-Z – Nixie

The nixie, Germanic in origin and found in some of the Grimm fairytales, is essentially a river dwelling version of a siren. They supposedly would seduce men and lure them into the water where they would drown their willing captives. They could assume various forms, including that of a fish and a snake, and in some legends they would assume the shape of a majestic enchanted horse in order to lure girls into the water. Supposedly, you could identify a nixie in its human form when not in the water by the damp hem of her dress.

While not always portrayed as malicious in all of the fairytales, I’m including the nixie because of their scarier ways, ominous and murderous at times.

Above is my sketch of a nixie.
