My Favourite Monsters A-Z – Jormungandr

October 12, 2012 at 11:13 pm (fantasy, writing) (, , , , , )

As you’ve probably noted by now, I have an affinity for mythological monsters, and this one is another from Norse origins. Also one of Loki’s offspring and brother to the Fenris Wolf (they also had a half-undead sister, Hel), Jormungandr was a sea serpent spawned by the god of mischief and a giantess (no surprise considering the size of these things.)

Jormungandr wasn’t just any only sea serpent, however. This picture depicts him in his younger smaller days, before he grew to full size. When he was done growing he was large enough to encircle the entire world, when touching head to tip of tail. Not the type of monster you’d want to catch in a bad mood.

It’s kind of scary to think that this child of Loki makes Hel look pretty normal in comparison.
