My Favourite Monsters A-Z – Gargoyle

October 9, 2012 at 10:19 pm (fantasy, horror, writing) (, , , , , , , )

Today’s monster is the creepy, ever-watchful gargoyle. This is a beastie that makes an appearance in a wide variety of scary fiction, a horrific artistic creation that comes to life. In some tales, they can only move about at night, returning to stone in the daylight. In other tales, magic brings them to life permanently, often to serve the whims of an evil sorcerer.

One of my favourite novels, “The Gargoyle” by Andrew Davidson, is named after this nasty creature. One of the main characters is an artist who sculpts these grotesque figurines. She takes in a badly burned man and moulds him the way she does her statues, pouring a part of her soul into everything she does.

I also like to include gargoyles in my own work, although none of them have been the living version so far:

As they neared the door, the travellers saw the pastel-toned stained glass windows of the manor illuminate with a soft yellow light. Someone knew that they were coming.

The gargoyles that adorned the pathway leading to the front entrance looked even more eerie in the rainbow glow, positioned in such a way that each statue’s frightful face lit up with a different colour.

“Ugh!” Kira grunted in distaste, and then giggled. Joshua, the youngest member of the Defiance, a mellow-looking man with light brown hair, and Dove’s husband, shushed her. When he turned away from Kira again, she and Joshua’s cousin, Kyle, cast haughty glances at each other behind his back, laughing quietly with one another.

“Remind me not to have this Galgamir landscape my walkway,” she whispered to Kyle.

Fun blog post! When I think of gargoyles I remember that creepy looking one from the movie “Jeepers Creepers.” Definitely one of my favorite monsters in books or movies also!
